Taxpayer Advocate Service, Internal Revenue

Description:
The Office of the National Taxpayer Advocate is established by statute for the sole purpose of assisting taxpayers in resolving problems with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Each state and IRS service center has at least one local Taxpayer Advocate who is independent of the local IRS office and reports directly to the National Taxpayer Advocate. Taxpayer Advocates provide an independent review of problems and issues that have not been resolved through normal channels, propose changes to IRS administrative practices and processes and identify potential legislative changes. Taxpayer cases that fall within our criteria include those:
►Suffering, or about to suffer, a significant hardship
►Facing an immediate threat of adverse action
►Will incur significant costs if relief is not granted
►Will suffer irreparable injury or long-term adverse impact A delay of more than 30 days beyond normal processing time to resolve a tax account problem
►Not received a response by the date promised.
►A system or procedure either failed to operate as intended or failed to resolve the problem
